What is Temperature Conversion Formulas?

Temperature conversion formulas are formulas for converting the value of temperature from one unit to another. There are numerous temperature conversion methods. The most generally used temperature scales are Kelvin, Celsius, and Fahrenheit. The temperature conversion formulas are described below:

- Celsius to Kelvin: K = C + 273.15.
- Kelvin to Celsius: C = K – 273.15.
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: C = (F-32) (5/9)
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: F = C(9/5) + 32

Temperature can be measured or recorded in various units such as Kelvin, Celsius, and Fahrenheit. Temperature is measured in three separate units: Celsius (°C), Fahrenheit (°F), and Kelvin (K).

The SI unit of temperature measurement is Kelvin, but Fahrenheit and Celsius are commonly used scales.

Celsius

The Celsius scale was named after Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius, who invented it in 1742. Celsius, commonly known as centigrade, is based on the freezing point of water (0°) and the boiling point of water (100°). The temperature in Celsius is denoted by °C. A human body’s average temperature is 37°C.

Fahrenheit

The Fahrenheit scale is a temperature scale named after Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, who invented it. The boiling temperature of the water on this scale is 212° F, and the freezing point is 32° F. The temperature in Fahrenheit is denoted by the symbol °F. The average body temperature is 98.6°F.

Kelvin

The SI temperature unit is Kelvin. K is the unit symbol. It bears the name of physicist William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin (1824–1907). Unlike in Celsius or Fahrenheit, the degree symbol ° is not used to represent temperature here.

Temperature Conversion Formulas between Celsius and Kelvin

The following formulas are used to convert temperatures between Celsius and Kelvin:

- The Celsius to Kelvin temperature conversion formula is: K = C + 273.15
- C = K 273.15 is the temperature conversion formula from Kelvin to Celsius.

Example: Convert 15 °C into Kelvin.

Solution:

C = 15°C

K= C + 273.15

= 15+273.15

=288.15 K

So, we could say that, 15°C is equivalent to 288.15 K.

The following formulas are used to convert temperatures between Fahrenheit and Celsius:

- The Fahrenheit to Celsius temperature conversion formula is: C = (F – 32) 5/9
- F = C(9/5) + 32 is the temperature conversion formula from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Example: Convert 120°F on the Celsius scale

Solution:

F= 120°F (Given)

C= (F – 32) 5/9

= (120-32) 5/9

=440/9

=48.88C

The Kelvin to Fahrenheit temperature conversion formula is:

F = (K – 273.15) × 9/5 + 32

Example: Convert 150 degrees Fahrenheit to Kelvin.

Solution: F = 150 F(Given).

K = (F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15

=(150 − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15

=118 × 5/9 + 273.15

=590/9 + 273.15

=65.55

= 338.7 K

So, we could say that, 150 °F is equivalent to 338.7K

Some Tips and Tricks to Remember Temperature Conversion Formulas:

- To remember the temperature conversion formula without fractions, remember 5(°F)= 9(°C) +160.
- Another method for converting Celsius to Fahrenheit is to double the Celsius degree by 1.8 and then add 32.
- Subtract 30 from the Celsius temperature and divide by 2 to get the estimated temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.
