After noticing the difficulties many international students face in overcoming language barriers while learning to fly, undergraduates Zihui (Amanda) Zhu and Shen-Chi (Daniel) Chiu did something about it.

Zhu, an aviation business administration major, and Chiu, who majors in aeronautics, designed a six-week language and communication program to help close the gap between classroom learning and the flight deck environment using virtual-reality training in the school’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) Lab.

Aerospace engineering graduate Merafelina Chotoo, who now works at Collins Aerospace, landed several key internships while studying at EMBRY-RIDDLE. They included a co-op in the component engineering department at Delta Air Lines when she was a sophomore that allowed her to visit countries such as Spain, South Korea, Peru and Brazil.

As a senior, Chotoo worked with a faculty member on a research project for the Ford Motor Company, which provided her a wealth of hands-on engineering experience.

Wanjiku Chebet Kanjumba earned her B.S. and M.S. in aerospace engineering at EMBRY-RIDDLE and was also the first Kenyan graduate of the prestigious scientist-astronaut program Project PoSSUM, which stands for Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere.

In addition to studying global climate through the program, Kanjumba also co-founded a company called Vicillion, a project development and engineering firm focused on bringing innovative product ideas to life.
