Mary ran quickly Which word is “quickly” modifying?? Adverb: a word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb Adverbs can make your writing more exciting so get pumped!!

An adverb can answer at least one out of five questions: How? When? Where? To what extent? Why? Example: “Mary ran quickly” How did Mary run? She ran quickly When did Mary run? She ran yesterday

– Many adverbs, but not all, end with –ly – The words “not” and “never” are ALWAYS adverbs – Ex: Yvonne would not eat her sandwich – (not modifies eat) – Be careful not to confuse good and well!

Preposition example: Carol usually gets up early.(Adverb= early) Infinitives I’m saving my money to buy a car. (Adverb= to buy a car)
