Up Your Score: SAT, 2018-2019 Edition: The Underground Guide to Outsmarting "The Test" by [Larry Berger, Michael Colton, Manek Mistry, Paul Rossi, Samantha Bindner]

Up Your Score: SAT, 2018-2019 Edition: The Underground Guide to Outsmarting “The Test” Kindle Edition

Thoroughly revised for the revamped SAT, Up Your Score: SAT is the only test-prep guide written for students by students—all of whom achieved perfect or near-perfect scores and went on to the colleges of their choice. A complement and reality check to the mainstream SAT study guides, it’s the book that kids recommend to one another, because it’s as entertaining as it is effective, showing students how to:
• Think like the SAT
• Ramp up their “mental math” powers
• Remember the 12 most important grammar rules
• Hone speed and timing
• Understand key vocabulary words in context
• Be a better guesser (and why it’s always better to guess)
• Vanquish anxiety and improve concentration
• Best fill in the answer circles, saving nearly six minutes
• Unwind with SAT Yoga

Between all the terrible jokes that are hard to get through, about half the pages aren’t even useful; it provides stories of an “SAT Serpent” and other ridiculousness. I gave it three stars because I did find useful some of the tools in the book, but anybody would ultimately make a much better use of time reading another SAT prep book, even if their a little bit more costly (I recommend the “SAT Prep Black Book,” by Mike and Patrick Barrett.)

Bought this and the ACT version for my high school junior. This book, while not having many actual test questions, offers often amusing and quirky insight into strategies for taking the test. It teaches techniques for answering questions for which you don’t know the answer. Importantly, it’s not boring!

I took the SATs circa 2003 and used this study guide. While I can’t speak for the current version, I attribute most of my improvement on the SATs to this book. I increased my score by 300 points from PSAT to SAT.
What I liked so much about this book was how it approaches learning with creativity and humor. For example, teaching vocabulary using funny pictures and rhymes to teach the meaning of a word is so much more effective than bland, rote memorization.
I just wish they made these books for more practical topics! I could learn almost anything if it was taught this cleverly.
