Description
This is a great way to work in the Course Skills of Data Analysis, Source Analysis, and Scale Analysis! As you work through Course Topic 2.1 (Population), have students practice breaking down maps using a 5-step approach that is tied to the course description.
*Note: This is also applicable to any Geography course, or Environmental Science course, as the focus skills are the same.
There are 10 hyperlinked maps that take students to their corresponding websites to view or interact with maps. Students then use a 5-step analysis to unpack the maps. There is plenty of practice here and the maps range in scale, scale of analysis, theme, and time. Each of the maps bring something different to the table.
Ideas for use include:
- I used this during remote learning with my students broken into random digital breakout rooms. After 15 minutes of collaboration, they came back into the main room, shared their maps full screen (or the teacher can), while the team told the class about their map.
- 5-minute instructions
- 15 minute brainstorm session within breakout rooms/groups
- 30-40 minutes of presentation.
- Students can complete on their own, though you might want to have them choose 3-5 to work with.
- Students and teacher can do this as a class together.
Product Includes: (1 PDF document)
- 1 title page with product link to shared Google Doc where you make a copy for yourself. (Front)
- 1 page of instructions and ideas for use.
- 1 example page (also included on product for students with instructions).
- 1 page illustrating the highlighted course topics.
- 1 page illustrating the highlighted course skills.
- 1 page with hyperlinked citations and user agreement.
